In the 1950s, Friedrich Jürgensen, painter for Pope Pius XII, and author of ([Sprechfunk Mit Verstorbenen] Radiotelephony with the deceased, p. 1967), while living in Sweden found traces of extra voices on tapes with which he was trying to record birdsongs. Over the years, Jürgensen made thousands of recordings of the voices of the dead, ranging from his family and friends to people such as Vincent van Gogh and confidante and adviser to the Reichsführer-SS, 'Eduard Alexander Felix Kersten' the personal physical therapist of Heinrich Himmler (Reichsführer of the Schutzstaffel), one of the most infamous men in Nazi Germany and a main architect of the Holocaust.

These are claimed to be the world’s first recordings of Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP), the paranormal appearance of strange voices on magnetic tape.
